The automotive industry is probably facing the most critical challenges in its whole history. Completely new technologies for the powertrain and the body of the car are on their way, new markets in emerging countries prosper and customers’ behavior changes rapidly and inhomogeneous. Product evolution, increased customization and variety and changes in manufacturing systems add complexity to the manufacturing systems and increase production cost. About one quarter of the world’s annual production of automobiles is manufactured in the European Union. About 2 million direct jobs and another 10 million in the wide automotive ecosystem are employed in the EU. It is also the largest sector in private R&D investments with over 5,800 patents in 2011. In Germany, the largest player in the Europe’s automotive industry, there are over 825’000 employees working in the automotive industry in about 45 plants. The automobile has long since changed from a technical to a social commodity: it guarantees our pers.onal mobility and social participation, shapes our cities and landscapes, and structures our temporal and spatial thinking. This is why we have to rethink the whole automotive industry.
